Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Coordinator

Program Philosophy

Aboriginal health is holistic and includes the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and cultural aspects of life. Through this understanding, a vision of wellness which balances body, mind, emotion and spirit is promoted throughout the healing continuum.

The goal of the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy (AHWS) is to foster improvements in the health and well-being of Aboriginal individuals, families, communities and nations through:

  • Promotion of equitable, violence-free relationships and healthy environments.
  • Provision of equitable access to primary health and healing services and programs, including prevention, treatment and support, that are culturally appropriate and culturally competent.
  • Building on the strengths and enhancing the capacities of Aboriginal communities.

Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Program

The focus of this program is on activities supporting community healing and wellness, and crisis intervention within the broader community. Activities include sharing circles, traditional and western peer support counseling services, treatment referrals, program referrals, court based support services and culturally based healing and wellness workshops.

The Healing and Wellness Coordinator acts as an advocate for community members dealing with various social service agencies such as the Children’s Aid Society, Legal Aid, ODSP, Windsor Housing and Ontario Works.
